
Andrew Price
Lecturer in Music, Oboe
Oboist Andrew Price has recently joined the faculty of Boston University School of Music as a Lecturer of oboe. He is principal oboist for the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra and regularly plays with the Boston Pops Orchestra and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He is also acting principal oboe for the Boston Lyric Opera.
He is a graduate of Boston University, where he studied oboe with the late Ralph Gomberg, principal oboe of the Boston Symphony. His teachers include Jonathan Dlouhy, former principal oboe with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Larry Thorstenberg, former English Horn of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. From 1984 to 1988, Mr. Price was a substitute second oboe with the Atlanta Symphony, under the direction of the late Robert Shaw.
From 1997 until 2007 he was an assistant faculty member of the Boston University Tanglewood Institute and now teaches oboe for the BUTI Young Artists Orchestra program. His playing is featured on the documentary series The American Experience, produced by WGBH.
As principal oboe of the Boston Civic Symphony Orchestra from 1994 to 2011, he performed the American premiere of the newly reconstructed Largo from the lost Beethoven Oboe Concerto, as well as Thomas Oboe Lee’s Oboe Concerto, Persephone, written for him and dedicated to his teacher, Ralph Gomberg. The Boston Globe describes his playing as “beautifully sensitive and eloquent” and “first-rate”.
