About

Caslow Chien (CDS MS'25) is a second cohort student in the MS in Data Science Program. She found the world of data science through her undergraduate studies and various projects she took part in. Knowing where her interests lie, Caslow decided to pursue her graduate studies at Boston University to further refine her knowledge.

Tell us a little bit about the projects you did before coming into the MSDS program

Before coming to BU, I worked as a part-time data science consultant for Taiwan’s National Science and Technology Center for Disaster Reduction, where I developed a deep-learning model to predict disaster survival outcomes. I also interned as a data scientist at Accudata Research Institute, where I built a real-time recommendation system, and collaborated with Gogoro on a project as a data analyst, automated social media sentiment analysis. On top of that, I conducted research in AI applications for multimedia at NTU.

What made you choose BU and MSDS?

I wanted to continue my education in a place that could truly support and elevate my interests. The interdisciplinary nature of the MSDS program stood out to me—it’s not just about learning technical skills but applying them across different fields like bioinformatics, finance, and market analytics. The hands-on learning opportunities were a huge draw, allowing me to test out my knowledge in real-world scenarios. Plus, BU’s strong industry connections provide an incredible platform to grow as a data scientist.

What drew you to data science in the first place?

For me, it’s about the ability to turn raw data into meaningful insights that drive decisions. I love how it allows us to uncover patterns and predict future trends. With my particular interest in finance and economics, I’ve seen how data-driven strategies can shape global investment decisions. The constant innovation in AI and machine learning also keeps me motivated to stay at the cutting edge of the field.

Any advice to future MSDS students?

Dive into everything the program and the university have to offer! There’s always something happening. Whether it’s an event, a workshop, or a project. These can all help shape your career path or challenge your learning. Take advantage of the resources available and explore different areas of data science to find what truly excites you. These experiences will stay with you long after graduation.

What are your goals post-graduation?

I hope to become a financial data scientist, focusing on global macroeconomic trends and investment strategies. By leveraging data science techniques to analyze financial markets and build predictive models that drive investment decisions. My goal is to help businesses and investors navigate complex financial landscapes using data-driven insights.
