About
Anthony Huang (CDS MS'25) is an MS in Data Science student in the second cohort. With a background in econometrics and experience in financial data projects, he discovered a strong interest in data through both academic and personal work. Anthony joined Boston University to deepen his skills and plan to apply what he has learned in the program to the finance industry.
Tell us a little bit about the projects you did before coming into the MSDS program
Before coming to MSDS, I had some hands-on experience with financial data analysis projects with my econometrics background. I used logistic regression and decision trees to make predictive models analyzing market trends. In addition to that, I also worked on some data engineering features such as building pipelines to automate parts of the analysis workflow.
How did you become interested in data science?
Sports is something that I have great interest in. In my free time, I find myself diving into sports statistics, particularly for baseball. The way data can tell stories and predict performance is so intriguing to me. People always say that it was clear I wanted to further pursue data science.
What made you choose BU and MSDS?
Boston is a great place to be if you are into innovation and growth. There is so much happening here in terms of research, starts, and networking opportunities. When I was choosing my master’s program, I noticed right away how invested this school is in building out its DS capabilities. It felt like the right environment to grow in.
What was one thing you learnt the most while studying at MSDS?
The scope and capabilities of deep machine learning models is something that I’ve really gotten a strong chance to explore during my courses within the MSDS program. It’s been eye-opening to see just how powerful these tools can be when used correctly.
Any advice to future MSDS students?
Go to lecture and ask questions. You’d be surprised at how much you can learn by just being in the room every class. Even if you don't quite follow everything, just being present helps the concepts sink in over time.
In what field have you decided to utilize your data science knowledge?
I have a background in finance and economics, so I think that’s probably where I’m going to orient myself toward. There’s a lot of potential in applying machine learning to financial forecasting, risk modeling, and economic trend analysis. It’s an area that feels familiar but also full of possibilities for innovation. I think that’s where my skills can make the biggest impact.
