Mitchell Horn

Mitchell Horn joined the Faculty of Computing & Data Sciences in 2026 as the Data Systems & AI Engineer. He works with faculty to turn research needs into working systems: data pipelines, software prototypes, and AI applications built on large language models. He leads these projects from scoping through deployment and serves as CDS's liaison to BU's research-computing and information technology units. He also supports faculty-led student projects through CDS Clinics and BU Spark! practicums.

Mitchell brings a decade of research computing across three institutions. At the Yale School of the Environment, he built retrieval-augmented platforms over varied libraries of academic references and computer-vision models for identifying rare plant species. At BU Research Computing, he migrated research workflows to GPUs for 10–40× speedups and parallelized scientific code across multi-core systems. At Massachusetts General Hospital, he developed 7T MRI analysis pipelines and a 3D model for brain-lesion segmentation. He is principal investigator on an NSF ACCESS allocation of 3,000,000 compute credits for a flood-resilience benchmarking study.

Mitchell has taught 20+ workshops to 750+ researchers at BU and Yale. He holds an M.S. in Data Analytics from the University of New Haven and a B.Eng. in Biomedical Engineering from Boston University.
