Mark Crovella is Professor of Computing and Data Sciences, and Professor of Computer Science. He is Chair of Academic Affairs for the Faculty of Computing & Data Sciences, with overall responsibility for the academic experience of CDS students, including oversight of its degree programs and course offerings. From 2013-2018, Mark was Chair of the Department of Computer Science.

Mark's research has spanned a variety of fields, with data-centered approaches being a uniting theme. He has worked on improving the understanding, design, and performance of parallel and networked computer systems, mainly through the application of data mining, statistics, and performance evaluation. He has made particular contributions to data-driven understanding of the Internet, and is author of the text Internet Measurement. Mark has also contributed research advances in fields including data mining, analysis of social media, computational biology, and machine learning. His recent work seeks to understand how machine learning impacts societal concerns, and how to improve the social consequences of machine learning.

Among his various industrial roles, Mark has worked as Chief Scientist for the data science startup Guavus, developing big data solutions for the telecommunications industry.

Mark is the author of over 200 research publications, has received numerous awards for his work, and holds ten patents deriving from his research. He has served in a variety of leadership roles including serving as the chair of ACM SIGCOMM. Mark is a Fellow of the ACM and of the IEEE.
