About

Angela Brown’s path to data science began with a simple curiosity — picking up a programming book — which quickly grew into a passion for storytelling through data. Now an analyst for a global software company, she thrives at the intersection of analytics and strategy, recently stepping into a new role focused on data forecasting and visualization.

Angela was drawn to the online master’s in data science (OMDS) degree program at Boston University (BU) for its flexibility, rich course offerings, and capstone project, through which found a program that fit seamlessly with her life as a full-time professional and parent. She especially values the way BU’s curriculum builds progressively, turning each course into a stepping stone toward deeper understanding. For Angela, the OMDS program has been more than an academic pursuit but rather a launchpad for growth, connection, and real-world impact.

What initially sparked your interest in data science, and how has that interest evolved over time?

I began my journey into data science without even realizing it. A few years ago, I picked up a computer programming book and was immediately hooked. I found myself losing track of time while working on various programming projects.

Eventually, at the technology company where I work, I was introduced to the world of data. I decided to join a “lunch and learn” series on Tableau and fell in love with it. I was amazed to discover that data could be visualized in ways beyond Excel and that there were powerful methods to enhance storytelling through data. I craved more of this in my life, thinking to myself, "I want to create visualizations and explore data every day."

What were you/are you doing professionally or academically before joining the CDS Online Master's program?

I am a senior software operations analyst and the lead business analyst for Microsoft Dynamics 365 CRM at a global software company. I recently accepted a new position within my team that allows me to focus on cleaning, collecting, and analyzing data for the organization. I’m currently working on a project that looks at historical data from our annual client conference to create forecasts for the 2026 event.

Why did you choose the CDS Online Master’s program specifically, and how did it stand out from other programs?

I researched several universities that offer programs in data analytics and data science, and I found that none provide the depth and variety of classes that Boston University does. As a resident of Washington State with a full-time job and two small children, an online program is the only option that fits my busy schedule. BU meets all my criteria and more. The program is not only affordable and high-quality but also includes a capstone project — which allows me to build my portfolio while completing my coursework. It truly doesn’t get any better than that!

What skills or knowledge are you most eager to gain from this program, and how do you plan to apply them?

I am excited to learn how to apply my knowledge to real-world situations, build a portfolio, and network with my classmates. I have a fantastic opportunity to collaborate with and learn from my peers, which is a valuable benefit of this program.

Have there been any “aha” moments or unexpected insights during your time in the program so far?

Every class I have taken is an essential part of the data science puzzle. The sequence of the classes is carefully structured to build on previously learned concepts. I frequently have "aha" moments while working on problems, often recalling topics I learned earlier that help me with my data science projects.

What has been your favorite course in the program so far, and what made it stand out to you?

The AI for Leaders (Module B) course has been my favorite. It takes a unique approach, as the program spans two semesters and includes various milestones that lead to a final capstone project. Throughout these semesters, we have the opportunity to collaborate with and learn from our peers. It’s an opportunity that is unique to Boston University’s OMDS program.
