When it comes to the Master’s in Statistical Practice (MSSP) program at Boston University, one element consistently tops the list of what makes it unique: the Statistics Practicum. In the Practicum you begin statistical practice a few weeks after the first day of classes.
Get Your Hands Dirty with Real Projects
The Statistics Practicum is a two-semester, team-taught experience that throws you right into the action. Forget contrived problems – you’ll be working on live projects as statistical consultants for real clients within the BU research community.
The MSSP Consulting Service operates year-round, collaborating with roughly 70 clients annually. You’ll be part of a consulting team led by experienced teaching fellows (PhD students in statistics), all under the guidance of Professor Masanao Yajima. Before diving in, both fellows and students undergo a month of intensive training to ensure everyone’s on the same page.
Develop In-Demand Skills
The Practicum isn’t just about crunching numbers. You’ll learn the entire consulting process, from initial client meetings to delivering insightful analyses, presentations, reports, and even interactive applications. This translates to well-rounded skills that employers actively seek.
Weekly Project Presentations & Collaboration
Half of your class sessions are dedicated to consultant team project presentations. This fosters collaboration among your peers and provides valuable feedback opportunities from faculty and other students.
Beyond BU: Partner Projects Broaden Your Horizons
The Practicum goes beyond the BU walls. You’ll also tackle semester-long Partner Projects with external organizations. These projects are mentored by MSSP faculty and culminate in deliverables tailored to each partner’s specific needs. Imagine creating a working R package, simulating the financial impact of data policies for a multinational company, or evaluating the effectiveness of sensors for athletic training!
The Statistics Practicum is the core of the MSSP program, equipping you with real-world experience and a professional portfolio that sets you apart in the job market. If you’re serious about a career in statistics, this program deserves a closer look
