All day and evening summer courses are administered by the Summer Term Office located within the Metropolitan College building at 755 Commonwealth Avenue.
Courses with the CAS prefix may be taken for credit toward the completion of the College Program. Although most CAS courses offered during the summer conform to the numbering system in effect at the College, students are advised to exercise caution in selecting courses to avoid duplication.
Some CAS departments have restrictions regarding Boston University summer work when used to complete major requirements. Check with your department before enrolling in such courses.
Students may register for undergraduate courses offered in the other schools and colleges at the University as defined in the Undergraduate Programs Bulletin. These courses will most likely be accepted as elective credit. Note: Neither PDP or ROTC courses may be counted toward the 128 credits of academic coursework required for the CAS degree.
Four semester hours are equal to one CAS course. College of Arts & Sciences students may register for no more than eight semester hours (two courses) in a single summer session or no more than sixteen semester hours (four courses) in the entire Summer Term. Please consult with a CAS Academic Advisor (CSS Room 401) if you have questions regarding this policy.
CAS students may register for courses using WebReg or they may complete the registration form found in the Summer Term Bulletin. It is important to designate their college of registration as CAS, not SUM or MET. The following students should also designate their college of registration as CAS:
Seven-year Medical students taking undergraduate courses;
New entering freshmen and transfer students who have paid their deposits; or
Intra-University Transfer students who have been accepted into CAS at the time of summer registration.
Summer Term courses taken at Boston University are recorded on the BU student transcript and the grades are included when computing the cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA).
For summer courses taken outside Boston University
CAS will accept transfer credit only from an accredited program at an accredited college or university. Boston University students may not satisfy program requirements through the transfer of credit earned in the summer offerings of other institutions located within the Greater Boston area, unless (a) the credit involved is for a required course, not offered through Boston University’s Summer Term, or (b) prior approval has been obtained from both the responsible department chair and dean of the requesting student. Programs with the word “extension” in their titles will not be approved. Questions about the acceptability of domestic work should be directed to CAS Academic Advising, CSS 401. Questions about non-BU summer programs offered abroad should be directed to International Education Center.
A summer session is normally six to eight weeks in length; two summer sessions are equivalent to one semester during the academic year. It is recommended that students register for no more than sixteen credits during the summer term (two summer sessions) with a maximum of eight credits taken each session. This applies to both semester and quarter-hour courses.
Written approval from the appropriate department is necessary to have transfer courses accepted towards the major or for the satisfaction of College requirements. Courses taken to fulfill the foreign language requirement will only be accepted with the prior written approval of the Foreign Language Advisor in CSS Room 401.
Non-Arts & Sciences courses may be accepted as elective credit but cannot be used to fulfill CAS College Program requirements. It is recommended that a student obtain written verification that non-Arts & Sciences courses are comparable to others offered by Boston University undergraduate schools or colleges to ensure transfer of these courses.
No summer courses, taken at Boston University or elsewhere, will be applied to the CAS residence requirement.
A grade of C or higher is required for courses to transfer. Titles of courses will be printed on the student transcript; transfer grades will not be printed. Grades from other colleges or universities will not be included in the Boston University cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA).
No credit can be recorded until an official transcript is received. (Students planning to attend a Study Abroad Program must file an advance approval form with the International Education Center. At the completion of the program, transcripts should be sent directly to that office at 888 Commonwealth Ave.) To verify posting of transfer credits, request an unofficial copy of your Boston University transcript from the Office of the University Registrar or the Student Link. All domestic transcripts should be sent to this address:
