Study for Alcohol Reduction2 (STAR2)
Study for Alcohol Reduction 2 (StAR2)
What is the purpose of this study?
The Study for Alcohol Reduction 2 (StAR2) is a federally funded research program at Boston University. The purpose of this study is to compare a psychological treatment (the Unified Protocol) designed to be used for a variety of different types of psychological disorders, including anxiety disorders and alcohol use disorders, to a modified, therapist-directed version of Take Control, a program designed by the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism to help individuals moderate their drinking.
Who qualifies to participate in this study?
We are currently enrolling individuals who are at least 21- years old and are seeking help for both an anxiety disorder and alcohol use disorder. Individuals will be required to undergo a screening assessment to determine eligibility in the study.
What will participants be doing in this study?
If you participate in the study, you will receive either:
- A transdiagnostic treatment program called the Unified Protocol (delivered via Zoom)
- A treatment program that targets drinking behaviors more directly, called Take Control (delivered via Zoom)
Participants enrolled in the study will be asked to attend 12-16 weekly sessions, provide urine and blood tests, and complete regular breathalyzer tests. In addition, some participants will be asked to undergo two noninvasive brain scans, called fMRIs.
Eligible participants will be compensated for completion of study procedures.
