Hey, new Terriers! Welcome to Boston University!

Starting college and moving away from home? That’s a big leap. Sometimes, it can feel like jumping into the deep end—which is why we’ve put together a list of resources to help you not just stay afloat, but take a confident dive forward into your new life at Boston University.

Below, you’ll find resources on everything from mental health and immigration guidance to academic support. And this guide isn’t just for week one. Bookmark it, revisit it, and come back whenever you need a reminder.

Immigration guidance and compliance

Your first stop for visa help is the International Students & Scholars Office (ISSO). It’s your go-to for maintaining status and for travel guidance and updates on immigration rules. Whether you’re filing documents or just need reassurance, ISSO ensures that you stay on track, allowing you to focus on your studies and campus life stress-free. For more legal, mental, and housing support, check out BU Support Pathways. This program ensures that international students seeking immigration guidance feel supported on all fronts.

Campus resources and event updates

BU’s campus is big and can be like a maze at times, but the right tools can help you navigate it like a pro! From contact details for organizations to handbooks for budgeting and life, Global Programs provides helpful information that guides you through all the resources available for international students. Wondering what events are happening during any given month? Just check your inbox for the International Student Newsletter, which all international students are automatically subscribed to once enrolled at BU. You can also explore BU Today’s Featured Events Calendar to discover even more ways to get involved on campus.

Academic support and success services

BU’s Educational Resource Center (ERC) is your one-stop shop for tutoring, writing support, language learning, and study skills workshops. They also offer coaching to help you manage your time and adjust to US academic standards. If you want some personalized, long-term academic guidance, the advisors at First-Year Success are here to help. Whether it’s navigating academics, connecting with campus resources, or finding your place in the BU community, the advisors are your cheerleaders, eager to help and see you succeed from day one.

Community connections and peer support

Finding your people can be hard outside of class, but these programs help you create a support system in your new home away from home. If you are the first in your family to earn a college education, then the Newbury Center is the place for you. Pair that with the International Peer Mentorship Program (IPM), which matches new undergraduate international students with current BU student mentors who’ve been in your shoes. Last, tune into the Talk About Series, hosted by the University’s Global Programs department, each month to hear from different offices around campus on topics chosen by international students for international students.

Health, wellness, and safety services

College life can be exciting, but it can also be stressful. BU offers a range of services to help you take care of both your physical and mental health. Student Health Services (SHS) provides medical care, urgent care, and counseling right on campus. You can book appointments online and even call a 24/7 hotline for emergencies. BU’s Student Wellbeing office also offers free workshops and mindfulness sessions to help you stay grounded and balanced. And last, if you ever feel unsafe or need assistance, the BU Police Department (BUPD) is on duty 24/7 and available to help students with everything from emergency response to safety escorts.

Avoiding phishing and scams

Boston University’s International Students & Scholars Office (ISSO) provides detailed guidance on how to spot and avoid common scams targeting international students. From tricky phone calls and emails to other common fraud schemes, their guidance walks you through what to watch out for and what to do if it happens to you. Be sure to check out these helpful tips to stay safe and confident while navigating life at BU.

Remember, the transition might feel overwhelming at times, so take your time, settle in, and know that it’s perfectly normal to feel a little lost before you find your rhythm.

You’ve got this, and support is always just around the corner!
