There are 3 comments on Why Is Everybody Talking About “Third Places” Right Now?

  1. Great article!

However, I have one question in response to the line” What began as an academic concept—the term “third space” was coined by sociologist Ray Oldenburg.”

Was it not traced back further to Homi Bhaba or Edward Soja? For the purists, there may also be a distinction between third place and third space.

  2. In addition to the communal spaces mentioned above, Boston still has good, small-scale music venues, some of them right down the street from BU, accessible via the 57 bus. To name a few: the Silhouette in Allston has shows on Monday and Wednesday nights; Porter Belly’s in Brighton has an open mic on Mondays; and (57 to 71 bus) the Canadian-American Club in Watertown has an open mic on Fridays.
