CAS Professor Emeritus of Physics Dies at 97
Edward Booth, a College of Arts & Sciences professor emeritus of physics who taught at BU for four decades, died on May 21, 2024. He was 97.
Born in New York City, Booth graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy and served in the US Navy. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Princeton University and a doctorate in physics from Johns Hopkins University. He taught physics at BU from 1956 to 1996 and conducted a wide range of scientific experiments alongside colleagues through-out the world at MIT’s Bates Research and Engineering Center (formerly Bates Linear Accelerator Center).
Booth taught both graduate students and advanced undergraduates at BU, delivering humorous lectures to keep his subject interesting.
Outside of work, Booth participated in the Vietnam peace marches down Comm Ave. He enrolled with students in all of the BU skating courses, and enjoyed watching the men’s ice hockey team. He consistently attended the home matches of the women’s ice hockey team (then a club), ringing a cowbell for every goal scored.
