Moira Marti Geoffrion of Tucson, Ariz., was invited to show recent paintings and sculptures in the Venice Biennale in 2026. The image above is part of a large grid made up of 8″ x 10″ paintings. When finished, Geoffrion says, the grid will have 144 paintings.
“These works focus on seeds, pods, and plant parts that I have planted and that are found in the Sonoran Desert region of Arizona,” she says. “This series of grid- or quilt-like groupings enlarges nature forms, thereby focusing on minute details of the natural environment that we pay little attention to that are essential for the continuity of the natural environment that we live in.”
Geoffrion, who has an MFA in sculpture from Southern Illinois University, developed foundries at the University of Notre Dame, where she taught sculpture and fiber arts for 13 years, and then at the University of Arizona in Tucson, where she was the art department head and full professor of art. “I am now retired and am able to work in my studio every day,” she says.
