Mortarboard Messages from BU’s Commencement—Thanks, Protests, and Lots of Flowers
Terriers use their caps to express support for striking Hollywood writers
If you were on Nickerson Field Sunday for BU’s 150th Commencement, you couldn’t help but notice them: mortarboards festooned with flowers, glitter, and all sorts of messages—from thanks to family and friends who helped make the Class of 2023’s big day possible to protests about political issues top of mind for them.
Some chose to draw attention to climate change and global warming, while others used the occasion to urge Commencement speaker David Zaslav (LAW’85), Warner Bros. Discovery CEO, to pay his writers. It was a nod to the ongoing strike by Hollywood writers, who are seeking better compensation from streaming and improved working conditions, and to the demonstration taking place during Commencement just outside Nickerson Field.
We’ve pulled together more than two dozen images from the ceremony that capture the seriousness and the levity that students felt. Take a look.
