There is 1 comment on Comics Artist Joel Christian Gill Launches BU’s New Visual Narrative MFA Degree

  1. Thank you for the great article, images and videos. Bringing Joel Christian Gill back to BU as the inaugural chair of this new major is, in my opinion, a triumph, and I think Dean Young and Dana Clancy have made the strong statement that excellence will be our watchword.

I have a definite positive bias toward the medium of comics and comic art as a longtime staff member of the Gotlieb Center, and part of the team of stewards for so many archives of artists, cartoonists, and illustrators (e.g., Constantin Alajalov, E. Simms Campbell, Al Capp, Harold Gray, Hank Ketcham, Everett Raymond Kinstler, Frederick B. Opper and Edward Sorel, just to name a few!), but also as a “collector”.

From about age 8 I read comic books voraciously and in my teen years began to carefully collect and care for them both as books to be read and as artifacts to be saved. In 1994 as a student at BU, I entered a selection of my favorite comic books (Miller’s Dark Knight, of course, but also Neil Gaiman’s Sandman, Matt Wagner’s Grendel; Bill Willingham’s Elementals; Swamp Thing, with both the original by Len Wein & Bernie Wrightson AND the phenomenal reincarnation by Alan Moore) in the (now retired) Blackmon Student Book Collecting Contest and was stunned to take first prize. I think it was all about passion and enthusiasm! I retain both of those traits when it comes to comic art and illustration and think that Professor Gill is an extraordinary talent and a wonderful advocate for the medium. Well done!
