Newbury Comics is a staple in New England’s record store community. The Vintage Underground is a retro oasis under El Jefe’s Taqueria on Commonwealth Ave. Owned by Cheapo Records and partnering with one of Allston’s favorite secondhand stores Vivant Vintage, the store is packed with clothes, tote bags, posters, books, and—of course—records. Opened in October, the Vintage Underground is the perfect place to find new music and refresh your wardrobe with stylish, quality pieces.

Prepare to spend some time at Nuggets digging through the crates, browsing the huge selection of genres and rare finds. Nuggets was awarded Best Record Store by Boston Magazine in 2019, and certainly deserves that title. The store is a gold mine for all kinds of vintage and modern records. They even buy or swap if you’re looking to give your old albums a new home. Nuggets has been in the vinyl business since 1978 and it’s still a beloved part of Boston’s music scene. Right in Kenmore Square, it’s a perfect place to shop then get dinner and catch a game at Fenway Park.

Nuggets Records is open Tuesday to Saturday, 11:30 am to 7 pm, and Sunday, noon to 5 pm. Usually open Mondays for Red Sox games.

Celebrating its first year in the beloved North End neighborhood, GOOD TASTE is one of the newest independent record stores in Boston. With a boutique style and curated selection, GOOD TASTE lives up to its name, offering the best of the best when it comes to new and used records. Environmental sustainability is a big part of the GOOD TASTE mission: they plant trees for each album sold, use recyclable material for mailing products, and ship with carbon-neutral options. GOOD TASTE is owned and operated by “The Taste Makers,” a husband and wife duo who have been in the music business for more than 15 years. Stop by the North End for some great food and great records.

Located in Cambridge’s vibrant Central Square, Cheapo Records is a music collector’s haven. The store is packed floor to ceiling with vinyl, CDs, cassettes, and more. They even have a clothing section in the back with vintage pieces and band tees from artists old-school and new. The neon signs and retro graphics make Cheapo feel like a blast from the past in the best way, with new releases paired with classics. This staple of the vinyl scene is a must-visit for any music lover.

As soon as you walk into Armageddon, you’ll be greeted by walls packed with records. The floor-to-ceiling shelves are bursting with new and used vinyl, CDs, and more. Armageddon is truly dedicated to the community, stocking music from local bands and labels as much as possible. It’s a favorite of punk and hardcore fans, but they offer all kinds of sounds. Armageddon is also more than just a record store: the co-owners Ben Barnett and Chris Andries operate a record label that releases music from a few bands the pair feel a connection with, like rock bands Dropdead and Morne. Armageddon is a multifaceted sensation and a must-visit for all music lovers.

Looking for some new records and sweet audio equipment at an affordable price? Offering refurbished speakers, turntables, and more, Village Vinyl & Hi-Fi has you covered. They’ll even repair anything you need to keep the music playing. Village Vinyl & Hi-Fi is located right in Coolidge Corner, so it’s perfect for a day out. The vinyl selection leans more towards the oldies, but Village Vinyl & Hi-Fi is sure to please any and all music lovers.

If you want to make your vinyl shopping experience more of an event, look no further than vinyl index. The Bow Market store includes a 10-foot bar with additional seating for DJ sets, record release parties, and any number of music events. Vinyl is a community, with lots of seating available inside and outside when the weather is nice. Bow Market even has a 200-person indoor space and an outdoor courtyard for larger events. Parents: Check out the store’s Kids 45 Club. For $17 per month, you receive a hand-picked 7-inch vinyl with an information card about the songs and artists, plus a tote bag as a welcome gift. It’s a great deal for those looking to expand their family’s vinyl collection.

Though it is one of the smaller stores in the area, Somerville Grooves has some amazing finds with even better prices. The Union Square store offers mostly used vinyl—some for as low as $1—but they do have a small selection of new records as well. Rock and indie lovers will find a home here, but music lovers from all genres are sure to find a gem or two—or maybe 10—within the shop’ curated collection. Stop in for some obscure hard rock or a throwback classic, whichever fits your mood.
