  1. As a retired Director of Exceptional Student Services, I interviewed and hired many candidates for positions ranging from teachers, therapists, and paraprofessionals to administrative positions. I agree that the best resumes list your degree and school (the school could me more impacting than people think!) then the experiences related to your degree. While it generally took me more than 6 seconds to save or toss the resume, the resume is actually critical in garnering the interview, which is the resume’s main objective. Avoid putting graphics and colors in the resume- from my perspective, it smacks of more style than substance. I would have several people look it over to check for errors in structure, spelling, and sentence structure. Spell-check does not check everything, nor does Grammarly.

When hiring, I would look for knowledge, skills, and dispositions. Honestly, the most underrated of the three is the dispositions. I need to get a sense of whether or not I can work with you. While I want your ideas and visions moving forward, as your supervisor I do not plan to my spend my time in debates with you. I need to know that you can support my vision in relation to our company’s mission while augmenting what we do with positive ideas to help us be even more efficient in that mission. Finally, I need to get a sense that you would be around awhile. If I get a sense that my company is a brief stepping stone to other things, I will wish you well and move on from you; I don’t want to repeat this process in 6 months. Good luck!
