Eat, Shop, Go
We’ve reached the time of the year when the sun sets a whopping hour earlier than we’ve grown used to and our schedules are bogged down by impending deadlines. We’ve curated a selection of events happening around Boston this coming weekend to wind down, get in some relaxation, and make the most out of our shortened fall days and longer nights.
Tawakal Halal Café
Super close to Logan International Airport, Tawakal Halal Café is a family-owned restaurant that’s worth the trek from campus. Having gathered a large following with its first location in East Boston, the flagship spot closed its doors in 2011, but returned in 2018. The new-ish Tawakal is as homey as it can get, with only two dine-in tables and a star-studded lineup of Somalian classics—like the biryani plates with basmati rice and the sambusas, perfectly crispy and filled with your choice of protein (our favorite is the beef), and paired with the signature hot sauce.
Tawakal Halal Café, 389 Maverick St., East Boston, is open 11 am to 9 pm, Tuesday through Sunday; closed Monday. Delivery is available through Postmates and Uber Eats.
Boston Open Market
A gathering of vintage sellers and handmade artisans of jewelry, blown-glass art, clothing, records, home decor, and much more, Boston Open Market is the place to try if you’re looking for unique finds close to home. This weekly arts market features over 75 vendors and is held every Saturday through November 27 near Copley Square and Newbury Street, so be sure to check it out if you’re looking to shop early for holiday gifts.
Boston Open Market, Copley Square, Boston, is open 11 am to 5 pm, every Saturday through November 27.
Night of BU A Cappella (NOBUAC)
Join Boston University’s a cappella groups for their annual NOBUAC concert, a rare occasion where all 12 groups gather under the same roof. The event, hosted by, and featuring, the BU Treblemakers, includes performances by Aural Fixation, the Allegrettos, the BosTones, Chordially Yours, the Dear Abbeys, Forté, In Achord, Kol Echad, Mustard Seed, Suno, and Terpsichore.
The Night of BU A Cappella is Friday, November 12, at 8 pm, at Morse Auditorium, 602 Commonwealth Ave. Admission is free for BU students.
miXxhibition 2021
Boston University’s K-pop dance group miXx is holding its annual dance showcase, featuring the latest and trendiest K-pop dance performances, this weekend. The group is known for performing energetic re-creations of Korean pop stars’ videos, with elaborate dance routines and often dozens of students.
See miXxhibition at Tsai Performance Center, 685 Commonwealth Ave., from 6:30 to 9 pm on Saturday, November 13. BU students are eligible for discounted tickets, at $9 a pop; tickets for non-BU students are $11. Learn about COVID safety requirements and purchase tickets here.
Gone Nowhere by Daniel C. Blanda
Boston Playwrights’ Theatre is set to hold its final weekend of performances of Gone Nowhere, directed by Noah Putterman (CFA’22), an MFA student in directing. The play is the brainchild of Daniel C. Blanda (CFA’21), who earned his MFA in playwriting and stars as Reilly, who leaves his wife and city to visit old friend Hunter. Reilly quickly realizes, however, that Hunter is not the same Hunter he used to know. The final performances are Thursday through Sunday, at various times.
Gone Nowhere by Daniel C. Blanda (CFA’21) is at the Boston Playwrights’ Theatre, 949 Commonwealth Ave., at 7:30 pm on Thursday, November 11, 8 pm on Friday, November 12, and Saturday, November 13, and 2 pm on Sunday, November 14. BU students are eligible for discounted $10 tickets; purchase tickets here.
