Eat, shop, go
It’s the University’s annual Family & Friends Weekend, and while your favorite people can’t visit you on campus, there’s tons of open houses, tours, and events that you can all Zoom in for. Elsewhere in Boston, we’re highlighting Fenway’s Time Out Market Boston, the Franklin Park Zoo, and a few more activities to get your mind off the weirdness of it all and enjoy the weekend.
Time Out Market Boston
Closed temporarily because of the pandemic, this popular eatery reopened in late July and is continuing to serve hungry Bostonians looking for an outdoor bite to eat. Based on the original Time Out Market in Portugal, the Boston location features cuisine from some of the city’s best chefs. Choices like the Eastern Mediterranean spot Anoush’ella, Cusser’s Roast Beef & Seafood, and Nu Burger give you lots of options to choose from. Contactless ordering is available here or through the Time Out app. There’s a small amount of seating inside, an outdoor patio, or green spots elsewhere around the Fenway area.
DeLuca’s Market
This Newbury Street market is an ideal stop for fresh local meats and speciality Italian foods. Upgrade your boring turkey and ham cold cuts to deli meats like prosciutto and hot capicola. The market sells many different cheeses, imported Italian pasta and sodas, and fancy chocolates. If you’re looking for a quick bite rather than a lot of groceries, you can also order a DeLuca’s sandwich, choosing from a wide variety of breads and deli meats.
Franklin Park Zoo
The Franklin Park Zoo has made changes to ensure the safety of its visitors and has managed to keep all its exhibits open to the public. About a 20-minute drive from campus, Franklin Park Zoo houses gorillas, tigers, zebras, and more. Capacity is limited, and timed tickets must be reserved online beforehand. The zoo is also hosting the uber popular exhibition Boston Lights: A Lantern Experience through November 15; many dates are sold out and reservations are required.
Even with all of the changes and safety precautions, the zoo is a fun excursion for Bostonians looking to see some wildlife.
Coffee & Conversation: Why Vote?
This week’s virtual talk, hosted by the Howard Thurman Center for Common Ground, will prep you to cast your vote by November 3, if you haven’t done so already. Historically in this country, 18- to 29-year-olds are less likely to vote than older people. The discussion will delve into why it’s so important to vote and ask for your take on the popular vote and the Electoral College.
BU Family & Friends Weekend
This year’s BU Family & Friends Weekend will undoubtedly look different compared to years past. However, the University is hosting a variety of events throughout the weekend for those who want to participate virtually. With virtual museum tours, meet and greets, school and college open houses, there is a whole host of different events for parents and students alike. Hear BU experts talk about the University’s successful testing protocols and plans for the future at an info session on BU Study Abroad.
Registration for the weekend is free, and members of the BU community can participate in a variety of exciting programs to fill their weekend.
