Coleman: “Dance for Me Is Life, It’s Everything”
For more than two decades, Jossie Coleman has been shepherding students of all skill levels to discover the freedom that dance provides. The warm and inclusive teaching style the Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance Department dance instructor brings to her elective Hip-Hop, Cardio Jazz Funk, Afro-fusion, and Dancing with Heels classes has earned her unanimous 5-star ratings on ratemyprofessors.com.
Coleman says that dance can initially be intimidating and that it’s important to create a safe place where students feel they can express themselves. “Coming into a room where people are experiencing dance for the first time,” she says, “my main goal is to be kind and to encourage my students, so that it’s a positive experience.
“Dance is life. Dance is everything,” says Coleman. “Dance gives us the space to be ourselves.”
