Advice to New BU Parents

Some words of wisdom from moms and dads who’ve been there

For parents of freshmen, dropping off your child at college is an emotional time, with happiness tempered by anxiety.

Just before Commencement 2017 last spring, we reached out to parents of graduating seniors and asked them to share some advice about coping with this new chapter in your child’s life—and in yours. Have a look.

And remember, Family and Friends Weekend is just around the corner.

  2. My daughter struggled in October/November of freshman year. She was fine until then. I reached out to the dean and he stepped up and made sure her support system was working. She graduated in 2016 with an excellent education and a job before her junior year was done

    1. Not sure which dean you are referring to, but if it’s Dean Elmore then I completely agree. He really does take time to listen to students, day in and day out. Stand up guy!

  3. Hi. I am concerned about my freshman as she has been housed in 1019 behind west campus and only seems to have one more freshman (who is her room mate and hasn’t moved in).. she is only surrounded by sophomores and hasn’t seen her RA at all. She is missing out on all the integration that other students seem to be having in Warren towers and west campus. How does she speak to someone so she can be included in other freshman activities ?

    1. Thank you for your comment. We’ll be sure your student’s RA sees her right away to review the many ways for students to meet other students in the days (and weeks) ahead. In addition to Weeks of Welcome events (https://www.bu.edu/studentactivities/wow/), the 1019 Commonwealth Avenue Hall Council will be forming during the next two weeks, and I would urge your student to attend the first meetings and even consider running for office. We have six professors living in the West Campus residences as part of our Faculty-in-Residence Program, and each professor holds open hours each week in residence; details about open hours are posted in the lobbies of the West Campus halls. I would recommend your student attend open hours to meet these wonderful live-in professors (https://www.bu.edu/today/2017/faculty-in-residence-bu/) and the many students who attend the professors’ open hours. Rhett Talks, which are brief lectures delivered by BU professors, begin this week, too. The first talks are set for 7 pm, Wednesday, September 6, at the George Sherman Union’s Metcalf Hall. Your student is also welcome to visit the Residence Life office (lobby level) at 1019 Commonwealth Avenue to meet her residence hall director, who is a great resource about ways to get involved in campus life and meet other students.
