Police ask for help finding man caught on Comm Ave surveillance camera

Boston University Police and Boston Police cordoned off the westbound side of the 900 block of Commonwealth Avenue late Saturday afternoon, diverting traffic into Brookline, and the MBTA temporarily suspended service on the Green Line B branch after a man told clerks at the Goodwill Store at 965 Comm Ave that a suitcase he was carrying contained a bomb. The man left the suitcase behind when he left the store.

BU sent a university alert at 4:48 p.m. advising all members of the BU community to stay away from the area. Police reopened the area at 6:09 p.m. after a police bomb squad searched the area and found no explosives.

Boston Police said in a Facebook post Saturday evening that they are looking for the person who left the suspicious package at the Goodwill Store. He is described as a black male between 20 and 30 years old, 5’8’’ to 5’10”, with short black hair and a thin build and wearing a light pink T-shirt, white knee-length shorts, and light brown casual shoes with white soles.

Boston Police ask anyone with information to call the Area D-14 station at 617-343-4260. Community members wanting to assist the investigation anonymously can call the CrimeStoppers Tip Line at 1-800-494-TIPS or text the word ‘TIP’ to CRIME (27463).

  1. Is there a reason that BU Today failed to include the fact – proven by the photo — that the person of interest is a black male? Could it be non-sensical political correctness?

    If a car sought in relation to a crime was red, or white, or black, we would provide that information without hesitation. What’s the reason for not providing the BEST description possible? In this case, it includes the information that the person in the photo is black.

Perhaps this was also added after the fact but isn’t the “short black hair and a thin build and wearing a light pink T-shirt, white knee-length shorts, and light brown casual shoes with white soles” also evident from the photo? The color of someone’s skin is a legitimate description to give when identifying a suspect. If this was a white male, I would also expect that the word “white” was added in the description. I think some of us are just too worried about being politically correct like Kitty mentioned…

    2. Kitty it’s obvious from your comment you sit waiting for any opportunity to call others racist because you believe everyone around you is racist. Stating the person is black does nothing for the article though you go to great lengths to pretend it does. It’s a photo, and the color of his skin is not even half as relevant as you want to make it out to be. Moving on, this is about identifying someone, not racism. I’m sure you can find some racist comments on facebook or youtube to reply to rather than try to divert the subject here.

    3. Kitty: Really? First, a picture is worth a thousand words. Second, this is not the Boston Globe or NYT. If you utilize BU Today as serious news source, you may want to question that decision.

  2. I’m curious to know how that picture was taken? Just someone on the street? Not questioning its authenticity, but didn’t think there were any surveillance cameras at that angle.

    I couldn’t find anything on the Boston Police Facebook page. Did you mean Boston University Police Facebook page?

    1. in recent years BU has added a great deal of security cameras on campus after the spat of robberies that happened. It is safe to assume that you are being filmed if you are anywhere on the Charles River Campus

    2. Most surveillance cameras are installed high above average body height for various reasons. It deters the general public from tampering with them in broad daylight as they would be easy seen by patrolling law enforcement.

      Because of the angle and the position this photo was taken, it’s highly likely that somebody nearby the entrance of the Goodwill heard the suspect’s claim of handling explosive items. This person was quick to think that footage of the suspect would be valuable and conspicuously followed the suspect for a few meters to take this picture.

    3. There is not a structure on Comm Ave where this photo was taken where a security camera could be mounted, no matter how small. It’s fairly obvious this was taken by a bystander – one who was thinking clearly.
