Class of 2012 Toasted at Senior Breakfast
Commencement speaker and Metcalf winners to be revealed

Approximately 2,000 seniors, dressed in their finest, are expected to file into the George Sherman Union Metcalf Ballroom today at 10 a.m. for what has become an annual rite of passage: Senior Breakfast. The event marks the official kickoff of this year’s Commencement ceremonies.
Members of the Class of 2012 will join Brown and Dean of Students Kenneth Elmore (SED’87) to share memories and one last meal (we’re talking strata and Lyonnaise potatoes, not cold pizza) before Commencement, on Sunday, May 20, at Nickerson Field.
After breakfast, Laurie Pohl, vice president of enrollment and student affairs, will discuss that three-letter word on everyone’s mind, J-O-B, and career development. Seniors will then hear what’s in store for them during Senior Week and get an update on their Class Gift.
Should the class hit its target of 2,012 donors by this morning, President Robert A. Brown will draw the name of one lucky student donor, who will throw out the first pitch at the Red Sox home game on May 15, accompanied to the mound by BU mascot Rhett.
According to Allie Rowe, manager of student philanthropy programs at Development & Alumni Relations, this year’s seniors could beat last year’s class, which set a record for donors (2,464) and amount donated ($66,000).
Seniors who give at least $20.12 can choose to earmark their contribution in honor of a BU mentor. That person will receive a card and a small gift in June. Students can also direct their gift toward any of 83 funds—from student life and athletics to scholarships and their specific school or college.
Several student awards will also be announced, including those from the Community Service Center, Athletics, the Student Activities Office, and Alumni Association, as well as the Scarlet Key inductees.
And last, but certainly not least, Brown will announce the class’ Commencement speaker, honorary degree recipients, Baccalaureate and student speakers, and the winners of the University’s highest teaching honors, the Metcalf Cup and Prize and the Metcalf Awards for Excellence in Teaching.
Senior Breakfast is at 10 a.m. today in the George Sherman Union’s Metcalf Ballroom, with overflow seating available throughout the facility.
