Women’s B-ball Beats Binghamton in OT
Stony Brook's defense holds off men's team

Amarachi Umez-Eronini(CAS’09) provided the heroics with a last-second layup in overtime, as theBoston University women’s basketball team (18-6, 12-0 America East) escaped witha 76-75 victory over Binghamton (10-15, 5-7 America East) on February 18and extended its unbeaten streak to 13 games. Kristi Dini (SAR’09) hit five three-pointers to break the single-season and career records at BU.
When the Terriers were awarded two free throws off a technical foulissued to the bench for coming on to the court with five seconds leftin overtime, Aly Hinton(CAS’10) hit 1-of-2 attempts to bring BU to within a point, 75-74. BostonUniversity maintained possession and with one second left, Umez-Eroninidrove to the basket for the game-winning layup.
Umez-Eronini, the Terriers’ America East Player of the Game, earneda double-double, with 11 points and a career-high 11 assists to go alongwith 5 steals. Hinton and Jesyka Burks-Wiley (CAS’09) each reached 20 points, while Dini added 17 in her record-breaking night.
The Terriers shot 45.8 percent from the field and 60.0 percent inovertime. They posted 28 points in the paint and 27 off turnovers.
The Terriers and Bearcats opened the game with back-and-forthaction. Neither team was able to score, however, until Hinton hit athree at 17:57. BU then held Binghamton scoreless until Viive Rebanewent in for a layup over three minutes into the contest. By the 15:18mark, the Terriers held a 9-4 advantage. Following two made free throwsby Rebane, the Terriers’ stingy defense held the Bearcats at six pointsfor the next five minutes as the home squad shot just 14.3 percent fromthe floor during that stretch.
The Bearcats knotted the score briefly at 10, but a quick layup from Kerry Cashman(CGS’09) put the Terriers back on top and sparked a 6-0 run, giving them a 16-10lead at the nine-minute mark. The Bearcats used a 7-0 spurt to tie thegame at 25 at 2:19, but BU responded and quickly posted eight straightpoints to up the lead to 33-25. Two field goals from Jackie Ward drewBinghamton to within four points, 33-29, at halftime.
After trading baskets to start the second half, Binghamton’s EricaCarter nailed a three-pointer to give the home team its first lead of thegame, 36-35, at 16:47. The Bearcats went on to a five-point lead,40-35, before Burks-Wiley halted the run with two made free throws. A three-pointer from Hinton and a jumper from Christine Kinneary (CAS09) two possessions later tied the score at 43.
Over the next four minutes, BU and Binghamton battled as the leadswitched hands four times. At 5:49, Dini hither fourth three-pointer to break the single-season school record and giveBU a 59-54 lead. With under a minute left, Andrea Holmes went in forthe layup to give the Bearcats a 65-64 lead; however, Hinton came upwith a clutch three-pointer to put the Terriers up 67-65. Rebane tied thescore at 67 with 30 seconds left, sending the game into overtime.
In overtime, Burks-Wiley scored the stanza’s first four points andthe Terriers’ first six as they owned a 73-69 advantage with 1:59remaining in the first extra period. Binghamton’s Andrea Holmes hitback-to-back jumpers to knot the score at 73. After Jackie Ward hit ajumper to give Binghamton a two-point advantage, BU was awarded twofree throws off a technical and converted on one attempt. With onesecond left on the clock, Umez-Eronini hit the game-winning basket on alayup.
BU will have a six-day layover before traveling to West Hartford,Conn., on Tuesday, February 24, to face off with the Hawks at 7 p.m. The game will be on CSN .
Michael Tyree scored acareer-high 25 points in his final home game to lead Stony Brook pastthe Boston University men’s basketball team, 66-54, on February 18at Pritchard Gymnasium. The Seawolves saw their 15-point lead in thefirst half shrink to one in the second, but used strong defense in thefinal four minutes to improve to 15-12 and 7-7 in league play, whilethe Terriers suffer their third straight loss, falling to 14-12, 9-5 America East.
Tabbed BU’s America East Player of the Game, John Holland (CGS’09) had 19 points for the Terriers, while Matt Wolff (MET’09) recorded a game-high eight rebounds and tied a career-high in assists with seven. Scott Brittain (MET’10) had 10 points and 7 boards, and Jake O’Brien (CGS’10) had 11 points.
For SBU, Tyree tied his career best in the first half with 20 pointsoff 8-of-10 attempts, including 4-for-5 from beyond the arc, beforefinishing 10-for-13 on Senior Night. Muhammad El-Amin and DemetriusYoung had 11 and 10 points, respectively, while both Young and TommyBrenton posted a team-high seven rebounds.
The game went back and forth the first seven minutes with Hollandtying the game, 18-18, on a three-pointer at the 13:03 mark after Tyree hadalready scored 11 points. The Seawolves then went on a 14-2 run cappedby Young’s layup at 5:55. O’Brien’s trey cut the deficit to 7,32-25, with 4:10 remaining, but SBU pulled ahead again to enter thelocker room leading, 41-29.
The Seawolves finished the first half shooting a blistering 64.0percent from the field off 16-of-25 attempts, including 7-for-9 from three-point land. They also committed only 6 turnovers against BU’s 10,as the Terriers hit 42.9 percent of their attempts (9-of-21).
Tyree drained his fifth three-pointer to open the second half, but Hollandhit one in response to spark the Terriers to a 15-1 run that cut thedeficit to one, 45-44, following an O’Brien layup at 13:18. Marques Johnson(MET’09) stole the ball on the next possession, but Tyree took it back and fedYoung for a fastbreak slam dunk that brought the crowd to its feet. BUnever got closer after that play.
The two teams traded baskets for the following seven minutes, withHolland hitting a jumper off a feed from Wolff to keep BU close, 56-52,with 5:15 remaining in regulation. Young drained a trey for theSeawolves to push the lead back to seven at 4:51. O’Brien grabbed anoffensive rebound and made his attempt under the basket to put the gameat 59-54.
The Seawolves, though, stepped up their defensive presence and heldthe Terriers to 0-of-8 shooting during a 7-0 run to finish the gamewith their first win against BU since January 2007, a contest won inovertime at home, 68-62.
Both teams combined for 50 points in the second stanza after scoring71 in the first. SBU hit only 7-of-18 attempts to finish 23-of-43 at53.5 percent, but hit 8-of-10 attempts from the charity stripe in thesecond half. Before the four-minute mark, the Terriers were 10-of-21from the field, but ended the game 19-of-50, including 8-of-26 frombeyond the arc. The squads each had 28 rebounds, and SBU had 15turnovers to BU’s 16.
Up next for the Terriers is a brief pause from conference action, asthey host Iona in a ESPNU Bracketbusters pool game on Saturday, February 21, at TheRoof, with tip-off set for 1 p.m. The teams last faced off againstduring the 1981–82 season. The series is tied at two gamesapiece.
