COM Students Awarded WCVB Thistle and Jacobson Internships
Mary Stackhouse and Jennifer Oles win summer newsroom internships

Two College of Communication students planning to pursue newsroomcareers have been given a leg up in achieving their goals withinternships this summer at WCVB-TV. Mary Stackhouse (COM’10) has receivedthe station’s 2009 Natalie Jacobson Internship and Jennifer Oles(COM’10) the Jim Thistle Internship.
The internships, established in July 2007 by WCVB-TV/DT and its parentcompany, Hearst-Argyle Television, Inc., pay tribute to anchor andreporter Natalie Jacobson and the late James Thistle,a former WCVB news director and a longtime COM professor of journalism and director of the Broadcast JournalismProgram. Thistle died in July 2008.
The Jacobson award, honoring Jacobson as Boston’s first female eveningnews broadcast anchor, is given to a student pursuing on-air reporting.Stackhouse, a graduate of the University of Alabama, is now in the COM graduate broadcast journalism program and has worked as a reporter for Neighborhood Network news.
The Thistle internship is awarded to a student pursuing production and news management. Oles is also in COM’s graduate broadcast program. She graduated from Northeastern University and has interned at WGBH.
“Natalie and Jimwill always be legends in our industry,” says Bill Fine,WCVB president and general manager. “It is wonderful that theirlegacies help support the next generation of journalists like Mary andJennifer.”
Two students are selected annually to spend the summer working in the WCVB/TheBostonChannel.com newsroom. The students are chosen based on their academic record, determination, and ambition to excel. The internships come with a stipend and give the students the opportunity to do reporting and producing under the supervision of the WCVB staff.
Thistle was presented with the 2008 Radio-Television News Directors Association Lifetime Achievement Award. Jacobson received the same honor in 2005.
