Meet Omeed Askari (CAS’11)
Omeed Askari (CAS’11) follows in his father’s footsteps at BU.

Name: Omeed Askari
From: Mission Viejo, California
School: College of Arts and Sciences
Major: Computer science
Why did you choose BU?
I chose BU because I needed a change from everything in California. I want to challenge myself by moving somewhere completely opposite of where I’ve grown up. Not to mention my dad’s an alumnus, and I thought I’d start a family tradition.
What are you most looking forward to about Boston?
The collegiate city environment, the new faces and new personalities, and making an independent life for myself.
What will you miss most about home?
My best friend, my family — those are givens. I’ll also miss the wonderful weather, Mexican food, and of course, In-N-Out Burger — order #1, no onions.
What will you miss least about home?
I can proudly say that I will not miss living in a red county in the middle of a blue state, if you know what I mean.
Describe your favorite high school memory.
I don’t have one specific favorite high school memory. My friends have made high school memorable. If I had to pick one memory, I would pick graduation. I will never forget that day — thanks, Mom and Dad!
What high school activities do you hope to continue with at BU?
I was looking into the track team at BU. I pole-vaulted for two years at my high school. I also have considered jumping back into Model UN, which I was a part of all four years of high school. Mostly, I want to continue my community service, and I think being part of FYSOP 18 [First Year Student Outreach Project] is a great way to accomplish that goal.
What new activities do you want to try?
I have heard a lot about broomball, and I definitely want to join a team. I also want to get involved in student government and journalism.
What is one of your long-term goals during your time at BU?
To not get distracted or sidetracked from my studies. It’s really hard to say no to friends on a Saturday night, but I feel like now that I’m paying $50,000 a year to attend a school 3,000 miles away from home, I really owe it to myself and my parents to graduate somewhere near the top of my class.
What are you doing this summer to get ready for your first year of college?
Relaxing and unwinding from four rigorous years in high school. I’ll also get a job so I can pay for my one-way ticket to Boston on August 27!
