The work of Yoshu Chikanobu, a 19th-century Japanese artist specializing in ukiyo-e woodblock prints, is on display at the BU Art Gallery at the Stone Gallery until January 13. Ukiyo-e, or “pictures of the floating world,” is a genre that includes landscapes, urban scenes, and portraits of noted public figures and entertainers of the time. The exhibition at BU is the first to comprehensively examine Chikanobu’s career and features both prints documenting his advocacy for modernization in the 1880s and his later work promoting traditional Japanese values in the 1890s.

The BU Art Gallery at the Stone Gallery, at 855 Commonwealth Ave., is open Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, 1 to 5 p.m. The gallery is open to the public, and admission is free. The gallery will be closed from December 22 until January 2. For more information, visit www.bu.edu/art.
