Passion’s a puzzle

CFA's 'A Month in the Country'

Photos by Fred Sway

The College of Fine Arts Opera Institute and the school of theatre are presenting the opera A Month in the Country through April 16. In the opera, the Countess Natalia Petrovna tries to scheme her way out of an awkward love triangle involving the young orphan in her care and the tutor engaged to teach her son. Her matchmaking efforts lead to predictably mixed results, and A Month in the Country — based on the 19th-century play by Ivan Turgenev — has been called both comic and tragic. Written by contemporary composer Lee Hoiby, the opera is directed by Sharon Daniels, director of the Opera Institute and a CFA associate professor, and conducted by William Lumpkin, a CFA assistant professor of music.

A Month in the Country will be performed from April 13 through 16 at the BU Theatre, 264 Huntington Ave. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, and at 5 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $15 and $10 for the general public and $10 for BU alumni, Huntington Theatre Company subscribers, senior citizens, and students. University faculty, staff, and students can receive one free ticket with BU identification at the box office on the day of the performance, based on availability. To order tickets, visit their Web site or  or call 617-933-8600.
