Lawrence Long (MCom, Ph.D.) is a health economist and public health policy researcher. Lawrence did his undergraduate degree in business science with a specialization in economics and finance and then went on to focus on economics and its application to public health in his graduate studies. He is a Research Assistant Professor at the Boston University School of Public Health and holds a joint appointment at the University of Witwatersrand (Johannesburg, South Africa). He has more than 15 years of experience conducting applied research on the economic impact of HIV, tuberculosis, and associated conditions within South Africa and sub-Saharan Africa. Prior to his appointment at Boston University, he led a growing South African research group as the deputy director and has extensive experience in organizational management, leadership, and grant management. Currently, he is a co-PI of a number of HIV projects under a multi-year USAID co-operative agreement in South Africa, the PI of a NIH project examining the application of behavioral economics to improve the uptake of pre-exposure prophylaxis in men who have sex with men in South Africa and an investigator on a Gates award to build behavioral science capacity in South Africa to support the HIV care and treatment program.
