Teaching Africa Teacher Leader

Dr. Chantei Joseph, (she/her), has served the students and families of Boston for over fifteen years, spending more than a decade in Mattapan schools as an Inclusion Teacher and Learning Specialist. She currently serves the Boston Public Schools district as the Assistant Director of Out of District Schools. Her work is grounded in a deep belief that literacy is liberation, and every child deserves access to a high-quality education built on equity, connection, and trust. She takes pride in fostering strong partnerships with students, families, colleagues, and service providers to ensure that every learner and their community of support feels seen, championed, and empowered. She holds a Bachelors in Biology with a Chemistry minor from Atlantic Union College, a Masters in Education: Higher Education Administration from Northeastern University, a Masters in Education: Moderate Disabilities from Lesley University, and a Doctorate in Law and Policy from Northeastern University. Dr. Joseph’s dissertation, “Evidence Based Instruction: A Mixed Methods Study of MA Teachers’ and Policymakers’ Perspectives on Teacher Preparation and Literacy Principles,” critically examines how teacher preparation programs influence the realities of Massachusetts educators, bridging the gap between classroom practice and legislative mandate. Her research represents vital insights directly from teachers and policymakers to identify actionable, restorative policy solutions.

Dr. Joseph is the recipient of the 2020 American Federation of Teachers Massachusetts Distinguished Service Award, 2021 Boston Teachers Union Committee Member of the Year, the 2022 Massachusetts Teacher of the Year finalist, and a four-time Teach Plus Massachusetts Education Policy Fellow. She currently serves as Vice President for the Black Educators Alliance of Massachusetts (BEAM), Coalition of Allies Liaison for Massachusetts Alliance of Black School Educators (MAABSE), a board member for the National Network of State Teachers of the Year (NNSTOY), and an Orton-Gillingham tutor for students experiencing reading difficulties.
