Peer Tutoring Graduate Assistant
Position Overview
The Peer Tutoring Graduate Assistant supports the day-to-day administration of the ERC’s Peer Tutoring Program. The Graduate Assistant helps the Assistant Director for Tutoring Services with hiring, training, and supervising Peer Tutors, as well as monitoring the email inbox and responding to student inquiries. The Peer Tutoring Graduate Assistant is paid $17.75 an hour.
Responsibilities
- Support the recruitment of new Peer Tutors, including reading and processing applications, interviewing, and hiring new tutors
- Plan, co-facilitate, and participate in Peer Tutor Training with the Assistant Director
- Maintain tutor schedules, respond to requests, and troubleshoot technology issues
- Attend regular meetings with the Assistant Director and Peer Tutor Mentors
- Maintain open and consistent communications with Peer Tutors, the Assistant Director, Administrative Coordinator, and other team members
Requirements
Candidates must be a current or incoming BU graduate student. Candidates working towards a degree in higher education, counseling, or a related field or whose career goals align with the position will be given preference. Due to the nature of the weekly tutoring calendar, candidates who can work some hours on Thursdays, Fridays, and/or Sundays are strongly preferred.
- 1-3 years of related professional experience (managing student employees, tutoring, training, project management)
- Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills
- Comfort and ability speaking in front of groups and facilitating activities
- Empathy and sensitivity to concerns and issues faced by undergraduate students
- Ability to maintain confidentiality with student records
- Excellent time management, project management, and organizational skills
- Positive attitude and enthusiasm for working collaboratively with other students, staff, and faculty
- Comfort learning and working with our tutor software, TracCloud, and with Microsoft Excel

Peer Tutor
Position Overview
The ERC’s Peer Tutoring Program assists students in developing strong study skills and an awareness of their own learning processes, thereby promoting independent learning. Peer Tutors offer guidance and support to students in their pursuit of academic achievement. They help other students solidify their understanding of core concepts, guide them through challenging problems, and provide personalized study tips. Peer Tutors are paid $16.75 an hour. Tutors are only compensated when they have a student attend their sessions.
Responsibilities
- Engage students in their learning
- Effectively explain concepts and study skills to peers
- Be approachable and welcoming to tutees
- Communicate clearly and promptly with tutees, the Peer Tutoring GA, and the AD as needed
- Arrive on time to all appointments
- Post at least 4 hours of availability in TracCloud each week
- Sign in and out of your appointments and ensure that students do the same
- Attend New Tutor Training, Tech Training, and All-Staff Meetings
Requirements
- Open only to undergraduate students in good academic, disciplinary, and financial standing
- Must have a cumulative GPA at BU of 3.0 or higher
- Must have taken the relevant course(s) at BU and earned a B+ or higher
- Minimum of 4 hours of availability per week
- Commit to at least two consecutive semesters

Writing Fellow
Position Overview
Writing Fellows (WFs) support the academic mission of the Educational Resource Center by providing individual tutoring sessions to all BU students. WFs work with students at any point in the writing process and for all types of writing assignments, aiming to guide and empower students to become more confident and capable writers. In addition, WFs attend training sessions throughout the semester and complete administrative tasks such as responding to e-mails, processing session notes and communicating with the Assistant Director. WFs will be paid $22.66 an hour.
Responsibilities
Writing Fellows conduct 45-minute individual appointments (in person and via ZOOM) with students to discuss and develop their writing. WFs must log these students in and out and respond to scheduling requests. WFs work 5 to 15 hours per week, including potentially on evenings and weekends. WFs are required to attend bi-weekly staff meetings on Fridays 10-11AM and a pre-semester training. Additionally, Writing Fellows periodically facilitate workshops and promotional efforts throughout the Boston University community, as well as working on other related projects as needed for the AD. A minimum of a two-semester commitment to the position is required.
As of Fall 2025, select WFs will tutor “Presentation Prep” appointments, which will provide a space for students to practice and polish presentations as well as their public speaking skills. These WFs must have extensive experience with public speaking, insight into effective rhetorical practices and a capacity for careful listening. Candidates applying to become a Writing Fellow should indicate if they are also interested in dedicating some of their tutoring hours to Presentation Prep.
Requirements
Candidates must be current Boston University graduate students with excellent writing and communication skills. Candidates should have a thorough understanding of best writing practices and grammatical conventions and should demonstrate a capacity to engage diverse groups in generative dialogues. A minimum of one year of experience in teaching and tutoring college-level writing is required. Additional experience in ELL education is desirable.

Student Desk Assistant (SDA)
Position Overview
Student Desk Assistants (SDAs) serve as liaisons between 5th floor Undergraduate Affairs offices — including the Educational Resource Center, First-Year Success, Transfer Success, and Fellowships & Scholarships — and students, visitors, and other offices. SDAs represent all offices in a positive manner while engaging with students and guests in person and over the phone. SDAs are paid $15 an hour.
Responsibilities
- Open and close the 5th floor desk
- Monitor the 5th floor study spaces daily by ensuring they remain tidy and enforcing the Study Room contract
- Welcome and greet visitors, assist them with their inquiries, and direct them to the appropriate office
- Check tutors into study rooms for their appointments and assist with setup of Wednesday & Sunday drop-in tutoring sessions as needed
- Assign students to study spaces and ensure accurate data collection via Google Form check-in
- Assist with other projects as assigned by professional staff members
Requirements
- Minimum of 5 hours per week
- Possess excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
- Be comfortable answering phones and interacting with a wide variety of guests in person
- Capacity to learn and use different softwares and systems, including TracCloud, Outlook Calendar, Google Drive, and Sling
- Share any questions or concerns promptly with their supervisor
