Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study (CAGS) in Periodontology

The CAGS-only program are devoted to pursuit of a clinical certificate in Periodontology through uninterrupted clinical experiences and didactic courses.

The first year starts with didactic instruction that provides in-depth training in all areas of minimal, moderate, and deep sedation, as well as clinical training to level of competency in adult minimal, enteral, and moderate parenteral sedation. The first year will also include clinical periodontology and related coursework. The second year continues with moderate IV sedation training, implant support crown restoration, clinical medical sciences, periodontal microsurgery, treatment planning, implantology, oral medicine, and oral implantology. The third year is devoted to the clinical practice of this discipline with advanced surgical training and additional didactic instruction. Students are involved in teaching and are exposed to research.

The Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study (CAGS) in Periodontology requires a minimum of 36 months of full-time enrollment.

Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to:

  • Better understand the statistical methodology used in the current literature.
  • Assess the correctness of statistical analysis in the current literature.
  • Gain better knowledge when reading the classical literature.
  • Incorporate the correct statistical method when involved in a research project.

Combined CAGS with Master of Science in Dentistry (MSD) or Doctor of Science in Dentistry (DScD)

Students can combine a CAGS in Periodontics with a research degree in either Periodontics or Oral Biology. Student enrolled in a combined program must successfully complete the requirements for both the CAGS and either the MSD or DScD:

The MSD or DScD program includes a research project, thesis and defense, or dissertation and defense. Research may be conducted before or after the clinical CAGS program, based on recommendations from the department chair and/or program director. Additional coursework may be assigned at the discretion of the research advisor and department chair.

Completion is not tracked by unit accumulation but by successful completion of individual courses and duration requirements.
