Boston University Greek Life

Leadership • Scholarship • Philanthropy • Brotherhood and Sisterhood

Welcome to Boston University’s Greek Life! The Boston University Fraternity and Sorority community consists of 10 Fraternities and 10 Sororities with about 1200 students.

The Greek Community strives toward helping you find your place within the Boston University community. Being Greek means more than just wearing Greek letters, attending meetings, and social events. Being in a fraternity/sorority is about making friendships that will last far beyond your college years while enhancing your personal and leadership development. Fraternities and Sororities are founded on specific values that help guide its members through the college years and beyond. Four ideals that all Greek Organizations possess are: leadership, scholarship, philanthropy, and most importantly brother and sisterhood.

Governing Bodies

All recognized fraternities and sororities at BU belong to a governing body which oversees the overall activities and wellbeing of the member organizations. These governing bodies serve as a united front among the Greek Organizations and regulate areas such as risk management, education, and programming for the greater BU Greek Community.

Inter-Fraternity Council (IFC)

Welcome to the Boston University Inter-Fraternity Council (IFC).

The goal of the IFC is to govern and promote the wellbeing and interests of its member fraternity chapters within Boston University.  The IFC is comprised of a general assembly consisting of at least one delegate from each chapter, as well as an elected Executive Board.   Currently, the IFC is comprised of seven fraternities.

The IFC meets every Wednesday during the academic year in the Boston University Photonics Center.  Each chapter is required to attend with at least one delegate, and each executive board member is required to report on his own progress as well as the previous week’s events.  The meetings are open to the public, and anybody is welcomed to attend.  If you would like to raise a topic at the next meeting, please contact ifc@bu.edu.

The primary goal of the IFC is the advancement of each chapter at Boston University, as well as their safety and security.  In doing so, the IFC works closely with the Student Activities Office (SAO) Greek Advisor in order to achieve this.  If there is ever a violation of standards or guidelines set forth by Boston University, SAO, or the IFC, the IFC Judicial Board, chaired by the Judicial Chair, recommends and imposes penalties upon the violator.

Fraternity Recruitment takes place twice a year, once in the beginning of Fall Semester and once in the beginning of Spring Semester.  Any men interested in Greek Life are encouraged to come to the Fraternity Open House at the beginning of each semester, or to contact ifc@bu.edu for more information.

Under the IFC President, the entire council and its delegates puts forth a constant effort to plan, coordinate, and better Greek life through fraternity-wide philanthropies, sports events, etc.  While working together with member chapters, the Panhellenic Council (Panhel), and the Multi-Cultural Greek Council (MGC), the IFC has helped ensure the continued success of the Greek system at Boston University.

The Four Ideals

Leadership • Scholarship • Philanthropy • Brotherhood and Sisterhood

Leadership

Every year Greeks program numerous events on campus, providing countless opportunities to take ownership in any number of events. In addition, the elected positions on the Interfraternity Council, Panhellenic Council and Multicultural Greek Council provide an opportunity to affect the entire BU Greek Community, the largest student population at BU! The leadership skills developed in these roles transfer directly to your chosen career path. Regional and national leadership conventions supply an invaluable and fun resource for making future connections and learning more about leadership techniques.

Scholarship

The Greek community upholds the highest standard of academic achievement striving to stay above the University average GPA. Transitioning from high school to college is made easier thorough upperclassmen assistance programs led by upperclassmen who have already taken the classes, regular group study hours, and incentives for superior academic achievement.

The National Order of Omega is a Greek Honor Society. Order of Omega recognizes outstanding members of the Greek community in academics, involvement, and leadership.

Service

One very strong tradition of both fraternity and sorority organizations is their support of chosen philanthropies, both locally and nationally. In the past, fraternities and sororities have raised money for the following charities: Emmanuel House, The Lupus Foundation, Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, National Prevention of Child Abuse, American Cancer Society, September 11th Fund, Alzheimer's Disease, Maine Sea Coast Mission, Children's Miracle Network, St. John's the Evangelist Soup Kitchen, Community Servings, AIDS Walk, Walk for Hunger, Ronald McDonald House, Rosie's Place, Breast Cancer Walk, Massachusetts Association for the Blind, Boston Area Rape Crisis Center, Salvation Army, and the Senior Citizen's Prom.

Brotherhood and Sisterhood

Fraternities and sororities create indelible, lifelong bonds between friends that are based on a value system entrenched in tradition. Joining the Greek system will provide you with a close group of brothers or sisters and create a home away from home. The Greek system also provides numerous social opportunities for members ranging from socials and formals, to group trips and intramural competition. We seek to create well rounded individuals through constant interaction with other Greek and BU organizations.
