From MAJOR BARBARA to DOCTOR DOLITTLE: The Incomparable Career of REX HARRISON

Rex

This exhibition takes an extended look at the long, varied and highly acclaimed career of Rex Harrison, on stage and on screen.  Through photographs, correspondence, annotated scripts, memorabilia from theatre and film productions, as well as notes and manuscript pages from Harrison's own memoirs, we can track the actor from his earliest days outside Liverpool, performing in a touring "rep" company, to his notable performances on the stages of London's West End and New York's Broadway: Bell, Book and Candle; Anne of the Thousand Days; My Fair Lady; Pirandello's Henry IV; and George Bernard Shaw's Heartbreak House.  We can follow his film career from his early work with George Bernard Shaw and Gabriel Pascal on Major Barbara; through the magnificent spectacles of Cleopatra; My Fair Lady and Doctor Dolittle.
The materials in the exhibtion were culled not only from Harrison's collection, but from those of Irene Mayer Selznick; Roddy MacDowall and Anthony Newley as well.

A smaller companion exhibition, GEORGE BERNARD SHAW: From Stage to Screen, explores, through correspondence and photographs, the fascinating, sometimes troubled, collaboration between the Irish playwright Shaw and the flamboyant Hungarian film director/producer Gabriel Pascal in turning the playwright's classic works for the stage into films.  The pair's work included Pygmalion, Major Barbara, Caesar and Cleopatra, and Androcles and the Lion.

The exhibitions will open to the public on Tuesday, October 2, 2007 for an extended run.
