Get connected to the Shared Computing Cluster (SCC) from your system.  Please refer to the documentation on the Access and Security Policies page before you begin.

OnDemand

We recommend that new and existing SCC users access the system using SCC OnDemand.  The OnDemand system provides a number of connection options from command line terminals, graphical desktops, file transfer utilities, and more.

SSH

Users who need only a command line terminal on the SCC can opt to connect via the SSH program. Instructions are provided for connecting from Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.

SSH with X Forwarding

The SSH program can be used to display graphics from SCC computers using the X Windows graphics system. The graphics performance of the OnDemand Interactive Apps->Desktop session is drastically superior to this approach and is the recommended method for accessing graphical applications on the SCC.

Port Forwarding

Some users may wish to forward network ports from the SCC to their computer. Prior to the introduction of the OnDemand system port forwarding was sometimes used to handle Jupyter Notebooks.  The OnDemand system includes Jupyter and JupyterLab amongst its connection options and should be used for that purpose.

Remote Desktop (VNC)

It is possible to run a remote desktop on the SCC login nodes and to use VNC software to display it on a user’s computer. The OnDemand system provides this functionality through its Interactive Apps->Desktop option. As the OnDemand system is significantly easier to use for a remote desktop, it is recommended over this approach.
