C is a classic language choice for research computing, because with it, you can produce the fastest applications.
Fortran is another classic language choice for research computing. It is particularly useful for performing array-based calculations.
Python is a general purpose, interpretive programming language. It is useful for both small-scale scripting tasks and large scale applications.
MATrix LABoratory is a user-friendly, popular, general-purpose environment for matrix algebra computations. Its many toolboxes cover applications in Biology, Aerospace, Finance, Data Acquisition, etc.
R is a language and environment for statistical computing and graphics.
