BU Solar

The power of the sun at BU.

In 2020, the University conducted a campus-wide solar feasibility study evaluating over 80 buildings and sites across the BU’s three campuses. Since BU Wind meets the University's electricity demand, on-campus solar installations are intended to provide educational and research opportunities for students, support the local renewable energy economy, and increase the visibility of climate action work at BU.

Active Projects

After initial studies, BU identified three projects to match 23% of the electricity demand at the Center for Computing & Data Sciences. In total, these three projects generated over 1.1 million kWh of renewable energy.

  • The Track & Tennis Center (100 Ashford Street) – 1,500 total Modules. 720.0kW DC / 480.0kW AC, designed to generate 734,000 kWh/year
  • Administrative Offices (25 Buick Street) – 525 total Modules. 252kW DC / 170kW AC, designed to generate 280,000 kWh/year
  • Booth Theatre (820 Commonwealth Ave) – 207 total Modules. 99.4kW DC /70.0kW AC, designed to generate 110,000 kWh/year
  • Kilachand Honors College Residence Hall (91 Bay State Road) – 16 total Modules. 8.6kW DC / 5.7kW AC, designed to generate 9,000 kWh/year

These initial three projects are set to complete installation in the late summer of 2023. After completing these projects, the University will continue to identify locations on campus suitable for solar installation.
