As we stand at the crossroads of environmental stewardship and community engagement, a transformative movement is underway at Boston University. ‘Pledge with Purpose’ was created to rally students and members of the Boston University community in a collective commitment to creating a Zero Waste campus environment.

Why ‘Pledge with Purpose?’ Because, over 90% of what ends up in our trash is potentially reusable, recyclable, compostable, or eliminated altogether. By embracing mindful waste disposal practices, we not only reduce contamination behaviors and foster a culture of sustainability and collaboration.

At the heart of our campaign lies the evidence-backed belief that individuals who pledge to a cause are more likely to act on it. Researchers at the University of Manchester have underscored the power of collective action in driving meaningful change.

The pledge itself embodies our shared vision for a Zero Waste campus and the University’s goal of Zero Waste by 2030. As outlined in Boston University’s Zero Waste Plan, our goal is to divert at least 90% of waste from landfills and incinerators while reducing contamination to below 10%. To achieve this, we must engage every Terrier and cultivate a sense of shared responsibility.

Taking the ‘Pledge with Purpose’ empowers community members to make tangible commitments toward waste reduction. Whether it’s carrying reusable water bottles, opting for the ‘Choose to Reuse’ program, or ensuring proper recycling practices, every action contributes to our larger goal.

By signing the pledge, Terriers acknowledge their role in shaping a more sustainable future for BU and beyond. They recognize that their actions, no matter how small, have the power to drive significant progress toward our Zero Waste vision by 2030.

Through ‘Pledge with Purpose,’ let us harness the collective power of our community to create a greener, but sustainable Boston University for generations to come.
