BUSSW PhD Student Lukas Chaves Accepted into Women’s, Gender & Sexuality Studies Graduate Certificate Program

First-year doctoral student Lukas Chaves at Boston University School of Social Work (BUSSW) has been accepted into the Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (WGS) Program at Boston University Graduate Certificate Program, an interdisciplinary program that provides advanced training in feminist and queer theory, methodology and pedagogy.

Chaves’ research explores how systems of oppression, including racism and cisheterosexism, shape relational strategies among individuals with intersecting marginalized identities. Through the WGS certificate, he plans to deepen his engagement with feminist, queer and critical theories while expanding the methodological tools that support his social work research agenda.

“I am deeply grateful for the support of the WGS program and my mentors at BUSSW,” Chaves said. “The certificate offers an exciting opportunity to lean into the interdisciplinary strengths of BUSSW’s doctoral training.”

His acceptance reflects the interdisciplinary opportunities available to doctoral students at Boston University, where scholarship in social work is strengthened through collaboration, critical inquiry and a shared commitment to advancing social change.
