Jeff Coulter taught at Boston University from 1974 to 2014 and served as the Sociology department’s chair from 1986 to 1990. He served as Visiting Professor at the Centre Jacques Bourse Institute for the Human Sciences, Rabat, Morocco and at Meiji Gakuin University in Tokyo for two semesters due to the Japanese publication of his book The Social Construction of Mind (Kokoro No Shakaiteki Koosee, Japan: Shinyo-sha Publishing Company, Tokyo. Translation by Aug Nishizaka, 1998).

Dr. Coulter is the author of numerous publications including Mind in Action (U.K.: Polity Press, Basil Blackwell, 1989: U.S.A.: Humanities Press, N.J., 1989), Rethinking Cognitive Theory (U.K.: Macmillan, London, 1983: U.S.A.: St. Martin’s Press, N.Y., 1983), and most recently Brain, Mind and Human Behavior in Contemporary Cognitive Science, with Wes Sharrock: Foreword by Dr. P. M. S. Hacker, (The Edwin Mellen Press, 2007, U.S.A. & U.K.).
In 1987, Coulter won the Metcalf Award for Excellence in Teaching at BU. And in 2015, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Sociological Association’s Section on Ethnomethodology and Conversation Analysis.
