James Borders studies impairments in airway protection (swallowing, coughing, breathing) and their impact on health and quality of life across aging and disease. The overarching goal of his work is to develop efficacious, personalized interventions that enhance patient care and long-term health outcomes, including pneumonia, malnutrition, and hospitalization. Dr. Borders leads a multidisciplinary, translational research program that integrates diverse fields and methodologies, including causal inference, meta-science, and clinical trial design, to advance the assessment and rehabilitation of airway protective dysfunction.
