Alarcon Bustos Conducts Workshop at Conference

Poliana Alarcon Bustos, a doctoral student in our Hispanic Language & Literatures program, co-conducted a workshop at the recent Third Annual Achieving Change Together conference on November 7, 2023. The theme of the conference was “Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion: Cultivating Educational Excellence in Education.” There were over 75 workshops, over 95 presenters, and 2800 participants.

For the workshop, Poliana worked with, Hilda Ramirez, who is the Education Coordinator for Minor League Operations at the Boston Red Sox. Their workshop was titled Bilingual Reader’s Theater. Poliana tells us:

“Reader’s Theatre allows students the opportunity to read a text many times and this helps them develop fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. In a Reader’s Theater activity, students read stories that have been scripted like a play, and they act out the story together. Students may practice their parts several times before acting the story out in front of the class, which gets them thinking about their characters and the plot in a focused way. Rather than using elaborate props, costumes, or scenery, students can be encouraged to use vocal, facial, and physical expression to engage with the script and their character. We immerse the audience of educators into theatre warm up activities and acting. We also provide educators with resources for implementation in the classroom.”
