A talk by Víctor Casaus
The Department of Romance Studies and the Latin American Studies Program of Boston University are pleased to announce a talk by
Víctor Casaus
“Defensa del testimonio: una mirada desde Cuba”
(followed by a reading of his recent poetry)
Víctor Casaus (La Habana, 1944) is a distinguished Cuban poet, documentary film-maker, screenwriter, and journalist who has also been a key practitioner of testimonio (or “testimonial narrative”). As a poet, he belongs to the generation that emerged in the 1960’s, often in the pages of the Cuban cultural review El Caimán Barbudo (of which he was a founder); his poetry has been translated into many languages, including English, French and Italian. His work in cinema includes documentaries such as Con Miguel Hernández en Orihuela (1980), Canción de Estelí (1981), and Que levante la mano la guitarra (1983), feature-length fictional films such as Como la vida misma (1985) and Bajo presión (1990) and, as a screenwriter, El hombre de Maisinicú (1973). His work within testimonio includes Girón en la memoria (1971), Otro tiempo, otro vivir (1984), and most recently Che desde la memoria (2004). He is Founder and Director of the Centro Cultural Pablo de la Torriente Brau (http://www.centropablo.cult.cu/), whose activity ranges from exhibitions of digital art to “A guitarra limpia,” a recital series whose mission is to support Cuba’s “nueva trova,” particularly its younger representatives.
