Sofia Caffo

My name is Sofia Caffo, and I am in my final semester of the Preservation Studies Program, concentrating in history. Originally from Virginia, I earned my B.A. Global Affairs with a concentration in Inequalities and Responses, along with a minor in Women, Sexuality, and Gender Studies Minor at George Mason University. Throughout my study I developed a strong appreciation for transnational and intersectional approaches to understanding the past and how it contextualizes contemporary issues. 

My research interests center on public history and community-based preservation of underrepresented histories. I am drawn to the ways the built environment and the archival record shape our interpretation of the past, and how more inclusive, immersive practices can honor the histories of the people and communities who created and make up these spaces. I also hope to continue engaging in advocacy and shaping public and cultural policies that center preservation and historical understanding. My work often focuses on queer and gender-nonconforming histories, especially forms of creative expression and protest. Outside of archival research, I enjoy reading, exploring Boston, and crocheting.
