The John and Susan Collins Historic Preservation Scholarship
The scholarship assists students seeking graduate degrees in historic preservation including students that apply to the MA in Preservation Studies at Boston University. John and Susan Collins were passionate about historic preservation, and John grew up in Boston and graduated from Boston University.
The Scholarship was established to support outstanding students in the field of historic preservation, and is supported through the Collins Endowment. Students from all Historic Preservation graduate programs are encouraged to apply, however, preference may be given to students enrolled at Ball State University, Boston University, and Eastern Michigan University. For the 2024–25 academic year, it is anticipated that scholarships will range from $10,000 to $20,000 per student.
To be eligible for the scholarship, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Be admitted to and actively enrolled full-time in a Historic Preservation graduate program with an academic focus on preservation of the built environment.
- Have earned a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

Application Process: Applications are open to current students and new students that are offered a place in the MA in Preservation Studies, and enroll full-time in the MA. New students will be able to submit their applications after being offered a place in the MA. For 2024 the applications have to be submitted online.
Deadline 2024: May 1. The committee is now seeking applications for the 2024–25 academic year.
Keepers Preservation Education Fund, Maine Community Foundation
The Keepers Preservation Education Fund provides financial support to aspiring or established preservation professionals in the United States through two scholarships: the Keepers Preservation Education Award and the William J. Murtagh Scholarship for Graduate Historic Preservation Studies. These programs support students who wish to expand their experience in historic preservation-related subjects. Awards may be used for tuition, professional meeting attendance, special book or other types of media purchases, domestic and foreign study travel, and other purposes as deemed appropriate.
For Boston University MA in Preservation Studies students, the awards may contribute some funding towards their graduate education.
1) William J. Murtagh Scholarship for Graduate Historic Preservation Studies
The scholarship was launched in 2022 for those seeking graduate study in the preservation field. For the online application process look at the Maine Community Foundation website.
Deadline 2023: May 15.
1) Keepers Preservation Education Fund
Available to students enrolled full- or part-time in institutions of higher learning with majors in historic preservation or allied fields. For more information visit the Maine Community Foundation website. We recommend our MA students instead to follow the application process of the William J. Murtagh Scholarship.
