Architectural and Community History Workshop Charlestown, MA: Site Visits
This semester, the Boston Architectural and Community History Workshop (course CAS AM 555/AH554) has been hard at work, visiting various sites and gathering information. The course, taught by Dr. Aaron Ahlstrom, focuses on the community and architectural histories of Charlestown, a neighborhood within Boston. As part of the class, students go on site visits, applying and practicing their taught skills on site, such a building identification on instructor-led neighborhood walks.
In these visits, the class also meets with community members and experts, such as a tour with Gretchen Pineo, of Public Archaeology Laboratory, Inc., Pawtucket, Rhode Island (above). They were also able to tour Memorial Hall in Charlestown with some of the board members (below).
The class was able to complete hands-on primary source research with the City of Boston Archives in West Roxbury, Massachusetts (below). At the archives the students examined building blueprints and photos of Charlestown for class group projects.
