K-12 STEM Outreach Programs

BU Photonics Center’s K-12 Engineering Engagement Program is implemented every spring in East Boston. Student volunteers from Boston University are paired with small groups of high school students in East Boston, to plan STEM lessons for elementary students in the area.
Following this collaboration, the BU volunteers and high school students meet at our partner elementary school, where high school students take the lead in teaching STEM lessons to the next generation of learners. BU volunteers support the high schoolers in the classroom as needed, answering tougher questions and helping the elementary students with hands-on lesson activities.
Together, BU and East Boston High School students are providing engaging STEM education opportunities for younger students who may not have a lot of exposure to role models in STEM fields. The program inspires elementary students to learn and high school and college students to teach. By giving back to the community, our volunteers are bolstering the STEM field and its future.
