IISD and Pardee Center Host Experts Meeting on Accountability in GEG

The International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) and the Boston University Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future organized an experts brainstorming meeting on  Accountability in Global Environmental Governance on September 9, 2010 at the Pardee House.

The meeting brought together a select group of leading practitioners and scholars in a brainstorming session to examine how the global environmental governance (GEG) system can be made more accountable and, especially, how the importance of this linkage can be highlighted for and given a genuine hearing at the forthcoming Rio+20 environmental summit, scheduled to be held in Brazil in 2012.

Experts who attended the meeting included: Adnan Amin, Director of the United Nations Chief Executives Board for Coordination (CEB) Secretariat, Amb. Lumumba Di-Aping of Sudan, who is his country’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations and has been the Chief Negotiator of the G-77 in recent environmental negotiations, Mark Halle of the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD), Tom Bigg of the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), Prof. Maria Ivanova of the University of Massachusetts at Boston, Dr. Miquel Munoz of the Pardee Center, Ricardo Melendez-Ortiz of the International Center for Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD), Deborah Murphy of the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD), Prof. Hans Peter Schmitz of Syracuse University, Ulf Melgaard of the Danish Foreign Ministry and Mission of the United Nations, and Prof. Adil Najam, Director of the Boston University Pardee Center.

As part of the Pardee Center’s suite of activities on global governance, the Pardee Center also organized a lunch seminar onAccountability in Global Governance on September 9, 2010, featuring some of the experts from this meeting.
