Irene Monasterolo’s Research Presented at COP21 Event on Finance and Climate

Irene Monasterolo, a post-doctoral associate at the Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future, had her research presented at a recent conference titled “Climate Change: The Finance Sector and Pathways to 2°C” at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) talks in Paris. The event, sponsored by the 2° Investing Initiative, the Oxford Martin School, and France Stratégie, focused on the of the finance sector in addressing climate change, specifically as it relates to the challenge of reconciling the long-term implications of climate change with the short-term timeframe of investment decisions.

At the conference, the preliminary results of the research “A Climate Stress-Test of the EU Financial System” — on which Monasterolo collaborated — were presented by Prof. Stefano Battiston of the University of Zurich. The research provides a quantitative assessment of investors’ portfolios’ exposure to climate stranded assets in the Eurozone, and of the losses on the balance sheet of financial institutions resulting from climate-policy risks.
