Moeed Yusuf Selected for Nuclear Scholars Initiative
Moeed Yusuf, a graduate Research Fellow at the Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future at Boston University, has been inducted as a member of the Center for Strategic and International Studies’ Nuclear Scholars Initiative (NSI) after a competitive selection process. Part of the Project on Nuclear Issues, NSI aims to build and sustain a network of young nuclear professionals by offering venues for interaction, scholarly research, and policy-relevant analysis. Members of the Project on Nuclear issues are officials and scholars associated with all areas of the nuclear complex. Through this network, various experts contribute to the debate and leadership on nuclear issues by generating new ideas and discussion.
Yusuf will remain part of the group for the 2009 cycle and will be responsible for suggesting a strategy for the U.S. to deal with nuclear crises in the developing world. More specifically, his task entails a study of India and Pakistan’s nuclear relationship and the U.S. role in diffusing tensions, should a nuclear crisis occur any time in the future. To supplement his first hand experience of South Asia, he will be interacting with members of the U.S. nuclear establishment frequently in order to take U.S. concerns into account and ultimately devise a realistic and workable strategy.
Yusuf is a doctoral candidate in the Political Science Department at Boston University. He is the author of a soon-to-be-published paper titled "Does Nuclear Energy Have a Future?", part of The Pardee Papers series published by the Pardee Center and based on research he conducted for the Brookings Institution.
